Description: Nakian was born on 1897 in College Point, NY, and aspired to be an artist from an early age. He recounted his first trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "When I was ten or twelve, I saw Phideas, Michaelangelo, and Rubens. It didn't seem strange to me. I felt I had known it all my life." Nakian studied at the Independent Art School, Beaux Arts Institute of Design, and studied in the U.S. and in Europe with James Earl Fraser, Paul Manship, Gaston Lachaise, Louis Comfort Tiffany, William Zorach, Brancusi, Raoul Hague, and Arshile Gorky.
